The OIE Reference Center for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) performs the virus neutralization test (VNT) for detection of equine arteritis virus antibody in serum and virus isolation (VI) for determining the presence of the virus in semen. Samples other than semen are accepted for VI as appropriate per consultation with Dr. Peter Timoney, Dr. Udeni Balasuriya or Ms. Kathy Shuck in the laboratory. See instruction for submitting samples for serum and semen collection protocols and shipping information. The EVA submission form is available to download.

The OIE Reference Center for Equine Viral Arteritis will only accept blood samples for serological testing for equine arteritis virus infection from the following categories of horses.

  1. Individual or groups of horses suspected of having equine viral arteritis;
  2. Stallions being screened for presence of the carrier state;
  3. Horses being tested for export purposes;
  4. Stallions being screened to meet breed registration requirements;
